Authorities said a Cessna 150 made an emergency landing in a field in Weslaco. The pilot was not injured and the case remains under investigation.

The City of Palmview introduced officers Rodrigo Lozano, Jesús González Jr., Christine De Hoyos and Daniel De La Rosa as new members of the Police Department during the City Council meeting. In the same ceremony, Cody Broyles and Genaro Cortez were promoted to sergeant, and the police force stood at 32 authorized members, key information for residents of the Rio Grande Valley.

The district said the report was outside the campus. After the “Secure Hold,” authorities arrested several people and classes resumed.

Brownsville Police are investigating the stabbing of a 71-year-old man, allegedly by his son, that occurred on Monday, September 7, on block 100 of Candlewick Court. Both were taken to the hospital; the victim has since been discharged, while the son remains in custody awaiting a court appearance, and the area of Galveston Road and Candlewick Court was blocked off.

Donna Police are investigating the case. The man was found unconscious in a residence in the Oak Ridge Street area and later was declared dead.

The Weslaco Independent School District reported that a supposed threat mentioning Central Middle School circulated on social media, accompanied by an image of “Cat in the Hat”. The district, Weslaco police, and administration confirmed it is a hoax and are monitoring the situation. They ask students and parents not to share the post and to report any message to an adult.

Drivers using State Highway 107 in Edinburg will face traffic changes on Tuesday September 8, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., while work is done between Sharp Road and Cesar Chavez Road. Traffic will be shifted to the inner lanes so crews can work on the outer lanes, and delays are possible, so plan for extra time.

Telemundo 40 McAllen (KTLM), owned by NBCUniversal, is the local station that serves the Hispanic community of the Rio Grande Valley and offers news, weather, sports and entertainment in Spanish. It began broadcasting in July 1999, was acquired in January 2014 and now provides programming and campaigns about education, health and immigration, with Texas news 24/7, becoming the information source for Valley residents.

The Mexican Consulate in Brownsville and the municipalities of Harlingen, Mission, Pharr and Hidalgo will hold Grito de la Independencia celebrations on September 15 and 16 in the Texas Valley. In Brownsville the party will be Friday the 15th from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Texas Southmost College Arts Center (80 Fort Brown St.), and each city will have events in its local auditoriums or parks.

Destiny Vélez, crowned Miss Puerto Rico 2015, was suspended indefinitely by the Miss Puerto Rico organization after posting critical comments about Muslims on Twitter. The announcement was made on the night of Saturday December 19, 2015 and the queen included an apology in the statement. Her Twitter account was closed, which is of interest to residents of the Valle del Río Grande.

Authorities from the Hidalgo County Sheriff's Office report that there is currently police activity in the south area of mile 10 of FM 491, within the city of Mercedes. The incident is developing and, according to the statement, more details will be provided as additional information becomes available.
