Parents in the La Joya school district asked for a meeting with Mayor Fito Salinas to voice their dissatisfaction after an incident on April 26 involving a primary‑school student and a secondary‑school student described as problematic. The parents announced they will hold a protest in the city on Monday morning, demanding justice for the alleged victim and awaiting a school‑district press conference.

Several schools implemented preventive closures because of nearby police activity. The district said the situation was not related to the campuses.

The Weslaco Independent School District reported that a supposed threat mentioning Central Middle School circulated on social media, accompanied by an image of “Cat in the Hat”. The district, Weslaco police, and administration confirmed it is a hoax and are monitoring the situation. They ask students and parents not to share the post and to report any message to an adult.
