Household garbage is collected twice a week in residential areas; commercial establishments can receive up to six collections per week. No trash is collected on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, or New Year’s Day.
Brush and debris are collected about once a month per service area. Crews start the first full week of the month in the northwest (Area 4) and move counter‑clockwise through the city. Recycling containers are open Monday‑Friday 8:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. and Saturday 8:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. at 1006 South Commerce. Phone numbers: (956) 216-5301 and (956) 216-5300. Acceptable items include corrugated cardboard, paper, aluminum and steel cans, tin, aerosol and food cans, and plastics #1 and #2. All cans and bottles should be rinsed.
The Transfer Station operates Monday‑Friday 7:30 a.m.–3:45 p.m. and Saturday 7:30 a.m.–2:45 p.m. at 4900 E. Harrison Rd. Transfer trailers are accepted until 3:00 p.m. on weekdays and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. It is closed on Good Friday, Memorial Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. The City of Harlingen offers open‑top container rentals to residents and commercial customers. Required forms must be completed and emailed to pwadmin@harlingentx.gov, after which you should contact the Public Works Administration office to arrange the deposit payment. No container deliveries are scheduled until the deposit is received.
